About

Businesses generate increasingly more data but often fail to extract its value. This presentation explores the power of no-code dashboards to convert streams of raw data into actionable insights without complex coding knowledge. Practical cases will show how to democratize data analytics by allowing users of all technical levels to leverage interactive dashboards. We’ll review how to structure your data sources and get a comprehensive picture out of them. The audience gets a roadmap for fostering a data-driven culture within organizations, emphasizing collaboration, agility, and continuous learning.

Talk in brief

In this WaysConf 2024 presentation, Julia Starun, Product Lead at Railsware, explains how organizations can leverage no-code automation to transform raw business data into actionable insights without relying on large, specialized data teams. Using Railsware's journey of building and launching Coupler—a no-code data integration and automation platform—Starun illustrates how manual data handling can lead to catastrophic financial errors, such as a spreadsheet mistake that cost her company $120,000. By transitioning to automated, no-code data pipelines, Railsware empowered its flat, manager-less organization to make real-time, decentralized decisions. Starun shares practical examples of dashboards used across product management, marketing, and HR, demonstrating how blending disparate data sources can optimize marketing spend, prioritize product integrations, and streamline operations. Ultimately, she shows that automating the middle layer of data preparation allows teams to use familiar visualization tools like Looker Studio more effectively while saving hundreds of hours of repetitive manual labor.

Key takeaways

  1. 01

The High Cost of Manual Spreadsheet Errors

Manual data entry and spreadsheet formula errors can lead to massive financial losses over time. Railsware discovered a $120,000 billing discrepancy caused by a simple failure to drag a formula to the end of a sheet.

No-Code Bridges the Data Talent Gap

The volume of business data and applications is growing exponentially, far outpacing the growth of professional data analysts. No-code tools allow non-technical team members to manage their own data pipelines and reporting.

    Decentralized Decision-Making in Flat Organizations

In flat organizational structures without traditional managers, employees must act as their own decision-makers. Providing self-service, no-code data access ensures every team member can back their strategic choices with real-time insights.

    Data Blending Optimizes Marketing ROI

Combining data from isolated platforms like Facebook Ads, Google Ads, Stripe, and Google Analytics into a single view is crucial for accurate attribution. This unified approach helped Railsware increase its marketing return per dollar spent by four times.

Automation Belongs in the Data Preparation Layer

The primary value of no-code data tools lies in automating the tedious middle layer of data gathering and transformation. Once automated, this clean data can be fed seamlessly into existing visualization tools like Looker Studio or PowerBI.

The Danger of Manual Financial Workflows

At Railsware, we bill our clients regularly, which used to involve a highly manual process. Every month, our finance team exported data from timesheet tools, manually applied discounts, factored in contract specifics, and generated invoices. Relying on manual spreadsheet formulas is incredibly risky; if you forget to drag a formula all the way to the bottom of the sheet, discrepancies occur. While a small error might seem minor for one client in a single month, these mistakes compound. We eventually realized that manual spreadsheet errors had cost us $120,000, which made us realize we absolutely had to automate our billing workflows.

Why No-Code is Essential for Modern Businesses

Although the number of data professionals in the United States is growing, it is not keeping pace with the exponential explosion of data and business applications. Companies simply cannot hire enough specialized data analysts to handle every single business decision. This talent shortage is why we turned to no-code solutions. By enabling anyone in the company to access, transform, and visualize data without writing code, we remove the bottleneck of traditional data teams and allow individual departments to move much faster.

Data Autonomy in a Manager-Less Company

Railsware operates under a flat organizational structure with zero managers. In this environment, every single employee is responsible for making their own decisions, tracking their progress, and identifying areas for improvement. To make these decisions effectively, they must base them on solid data. If we relied on a traditional centralized data analytics department to support the entire company's needs, it would have to be unsustainably large. No-code tools solve this by allowing marketing, product, sales, and HR teams to build their own dashboards and automate their own data flows independently.

Prioritizing Product Integrations with Data Blending

Because Coupler automates data flows, we deal with thousands of potential software integrations, but we cannot build them all at once. To prioritize our roadmap, we blend data from Google Search, Google Analytics, our website, support tickets, and sales systems. By gathering all these interest signals into a single prioritized list, we know exactly which integration to build next without wasting time in meetings. This data-driven scoring system has improved our return on investment tenfold since we implemented it.

Real-Time Data Onboarding and Scheduling

When people ask how much time it takes to gather and prepare data from different systems, the answer is that it takes virtually no time once configured. With Coupler, you set up an automated schedule—for example, pulling data every 15 minutes—and the system runs in the background. This means that whenever you open a dashboard, the data is already fresh. While it might take about 30 minutes of initial setup at the very beginning, you can then use that automated pipeline for years without spending any additional manual effort on data gathering.

The Role of Coupler as a Data Preparation Layer

Coupler is designed to act as a middle layer in your data stack. It allows you to grab data from various sources, transform it, and prepare it automatically. From there, you can easily feed this clean data into your preferred visualization tools, such as Google Looker Studio, PowerBI, Tableau, or even Google Sheets. Many of our own templates are built on Looker Studio because it is highly powerful and free. Coupler does not replace these visualization tools; instead, it automates the tedious preparation work so you do not have to rely on complex scripts or manual spreadsheets.
